When it comes to building a healthy email list, your website is one of your best tools. By encouraging people to sign up to your mailing list via your website you can turn your website traffic into interested leads and market to them on an ongoing basis.

You only get one opportunity to turn a website visitor into an email subscriber so it’s important to put some time and effort into finding the most effective subscription options on your site. This may take some trial and error and I highly recommend testing a few different features including:

Sign up box placement. Many websites feature a sign up box at the bottom of their blog or homepage. Placing an opt in form at the bottom of the page can unfortunately lead to it being overlooked or missed. Moving your sign up box to the top of the page is a simple strategy that makes it more noticeable and in many cases will lead to an increase in opt-ins. Other places you can try are the footer, after each blog post, in the top sidebar and even a pop up box.

Sign up box design. To be effective, your email sign up box needs to really stand out from the rest of your website. Design and colour choice makes a big difference here and again, if possible it is well worth testing out a few different colour schemes and designs to see what works best for your visitors.

Sign up text. Different wording can make a surprising difference to the number of email signups you get. Try to think of something unique and attention grabbing, and focus on the benefit to the subscriber when they sign up to your mailing list. This is another area where A/B testing can really come in handy and you may be surprised at the difference changing a simple word can make.

Sign up process. A lengthy or awkward sign up process is one of the main reasons why businesses miss out on subscribers. While it is always good to get information about your subscribers, on the first sign up you want to make the process as quick and painless as possible. Just ask for an email address and possibly a name upfront and if you want more information for targeting further down the track you can always send them a separate email inviting them to complete a survey or short questionnaire.

Building your email list is a highly worthwhile activity, as email marketing remains one of the most effective marketing strategies for businesses of all different sizes. By taking a bit of time to ensure your website is working as productively as possible you can build a bigger email list for your business.
